Ask the Important Questions Before Choosing Your POS Solution
As with any major purchase, the purchase of the right POS system for your business has several pitfalls worth being aware of so that you make an informed decision. Before deciding on a solution, do your homework and ask the important questions.
Some payment processors may charge fees on payment by credit card, particularly if they don’t charge you any monthly fees. The charges that take a percentage of every transaction, in addition to a flat fee, are commonly seen among POS systems. If you’re dealing with a lot of small transactions, the additional flat fee costs may be more than what you expect or they’re worth. You may wish to consider percentage fees instead. Make sure you’re comfortable with the payment processing structure of your system.
Does the POS system provide a contract or does it work through a monthly subscription? Depending on the setup, the credit card processing fees may be higher than the industry norm or certain service fees and/or other basic features may be higher. There is also the possibility of early termination to potentially consider. The safest course of action may be to have a monthly contract with a POS provider. Again, ask the questions to ensure you’re comfortable with the terms.
